Or maybe your book club needs a great book to read? Then consider joining your community
in a citywide read! This is the sixth year of the Eden Prairie Reads program and it's a fantastic
year to join the fun.
We are excited to announce that we have selected our book for 2010! We will be reading Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver.
Sometimes we go to the nearby grocery store and fill up our carts with apples, lettuce, oranges and strawberries -- and we don't often stop to think about where that food came from. Was it grown in Eden Prairie? Hennepin County? Minnesota? Was it even grown in the United States? We pick out our meat for supper in much the same manner. What do we know about that cow/pig/chicken (or whatever you eat!)? Was the animal allowed to roam free on a farm? What did it eat? Was it raised in close quarters with other animals? Was it raised locally or far from here? And does any of this even matter?
This book provides insight based on "a year of food life" for one family who tried to eat locally. Perhaps it will provide some insight as we learn more about the food we eat...
